Time remaining: 74 Days, 2 Hours, 49 Minutes
It's time to Unlock the Music! This is a brand new fundraiser for New World Youth Orchestras that incorporates our mission with raising money and components of video games: unlocking content and earning achievements. If you've played games like Guitar Hero or Mario Party, then you know how this works. You begin with a certain amount of games or songs you can play and as you master them, new (often more difficult) content is unlocked for you to play. In some cases, there are achievements to be earned for completing certain portions of the game in a specific way and titles gained by doing so – often for no other reason than bragging rights. But who wouldn't want that?
In this case, we've selected a piece for the orchestra: Bernstein's Overture to Candide. There are 30 separate parts (violin 1, piccolo, and tuba for example) with total measures adding up to 8,610.
We want your help to “unlock” this piece in time for our May 23 concert at Hilbert Circle Theatre. If the entire piece is unlocked, the full orchestra will perform the piece as written. If not, parts will be cut or portions of the piece will not be performed. Will we reach the bonus round raising an extra $1000? What IS the bonus round? Stay tuned...
Every $1 donated unlocks one measure in one part. Really, just $1! How often can you support your favorite cause for just $1?
A tally will be updated on the website and Facebook every week.
Special Achievements:
$30 donation: This supports the entire orchestra ($1 per part) so the donor is awarded the title of DEFENDER OF ORCHESTRAS.
$287 donation: This unlocks one entire part (flute 1, for example)! The donor is awarded the title of TRACK MASTER and the opportunity to sit on-stage or in the stage terrace during the performance of the piece.
All donations, regardless of size, will be recognized on our website and in a slideshow at the performance.
Donations may be made through a member of the orchestra, on our website through Paypal, or by mailing a check to the New World office. Sorry – credit cards are accepted through Paypal only.
Upon reaching the $4,000 level and the $8,610 level, we will hold a drawing for prizes – so send in your $1 now! Your name will go into the drawing for each $1 you submit. Prizes to be announced later.
May concert ticket giveaways will occur randomly from March through May on Twitter, Facebook, and Blogspot. Keep up with the conversation and our running total by checking into these sites regularly.
Have fun, donate, and support one of the best organizations in Indianapolis! Remember – every dollar matters!

From Blue to Red...a few colorful weeks of fun
Last weekend at rehearsal the rooms weren't so much peppered as drenched with blue. Musicians showing their Colts pride before the big game. Our two youngest volunteers ushered members of the orchestra to their seating auditions dressed in their team jerseys. Everyone rushed out at 5:00 on the dot to get home and see the kickoff. Alas, the results were not as we wished, but our pride in the home team remains.
Despite this, we turn to red this week (or maybe you did already - celebrating National Wear Red Day last Friday!). Sunday, concert day, is Valentine's Day...sure. But we wanted to bring more meaning to our audience and members so we partnered with the American Heart Association and their Go Red for Women campaign to raise awareness and educate our audience about heart health.
Have you been touched by heart disease? Or maybe you just focus on a healthy lifestyle. Join us on February 14, wear red, and support the American Heart Association. The concert begins at 5:00 pm at Zionsville Performing Arts Center. Tickets are available at the door starting at 4:00 pm. Adult tickets are $14 and discounts are available ($9 tickets) for children, students, seniors, and groups.
And don't forget - there's some great music too! Journey with us through the concert...listen for the following themes and note the stories when you attend:
Overture to Zampa, Herold: This is the overture of the opera-comique, Zampa, which follows Zampa's story through a pirate life, love, and family twists.
Symphony No. 7 (2nd mvmt), Beethoven: The movement, marked Allegretto ("a little lively") contains ostinato to listen for. Ostinato is a repeated rhythmic figure and in this piece consists of a quarter, two eight notes, and two quarter notes.
Radetzky March, Strauss: This piece with military roots is equally festive. Listen for the melody with the brass at the beginning of the piece.
"Danse Bacchanale" (from Samson and Delilah), Saint-Saens: This piece takes place during Act III of Samson and Delilah before Samson destroys the Philistine temple and increases tension prior to that climactic scene.
Cello Concerto in E Minor (4th mvmt), Elgar: Ju Hyun Lee, 13-year old cellist from Bloomington, will perform this movement. She is the Junior Division winner of our concerto competition - open to all young musicians in Indiana. We're thrilled to feature her this weekend!
Danzon No. 2 for Orchestra, Marquez: This energetic piece has much to listen for: the clarinet solo that begins the piece along with claves, piano, and pizzicato strings, the oboe answers the clarinet solo, and a lyrical portion in the middle of the piece that features piano and a duet for clarinet and flute. Enjoy the dramatic finish to the piece and the concert!
See you on Sunday!

Welcome to NWYO's new blog!
Welcome to the new NWYO blog! We're trying to find just the right mix of information for you and to explore new outlets for our members and audience. We'll have a lot to talk about!
An introduction might help us get to know each other better. My name is Ruth Wolff and I am the Executive Director of the New World Youth Orchestras located in Indianapolis, Indiana. This is my fourth season with NWYO and I so much love the variety of my job, the dedication of the conducting staff, and the joy of watching young musicians grow and hone their craft.
I'm a bit of a musician myself, though never aspiring to be a professional or even really play past college – where it provided me with scholarship money and a creative outlet a few times a week. What instrument you ask? Euphonium. Yep, that's right...little ol' me. My parents laughed the first time they heard that big sound escape from their little 5th grade girl. I fell in love with the low, mellow tone that felt just right in my ear. I still play on occasion, though I can't hold a candle to the talent that I see each and every week from our young musicians.
But back to the matter at hand. There's so much that I want to share about what we do as an organization and what happens behind the scenes. This is the first week of January – what do we have going on right now?
In our calendar, we're back to rehearsing. Only 6 more weeks until our next concert!
In the office, we're working on a number of projects this week:
-grant applications are being completed
-playbill edits begun for February 14 performance
-meetings with February 14 concert partner, the American Heart Association, and Zionsville Performing Arts Center director
-development of a fundraiser for the spring
-updating alumni lists to invite everyone to new upcoming events
Conductors are selecting seating audition excerpts and enlisting coaches for upcoming sectionals.
How can you be involved in New World right now? Tell us your story of how heart disease has affected your life – stories will be told at our February 14 Heart-to-Heart concert in partnership with the American Heart Association. The concert will be held at the Zionsville Performing Arts Center in Zionsville, Indiana. Tickets will be available at the door and are $12 for adults with discounts for children, groups, seniors, and students. Find out why we're a bargain for quality programming and to see the future of our orchestras, the future of our communities. You won't believe your ears!
Make it a date and spend Valentine's Day with us. A portion of the proceeds from ticket sales will benefit the American Heart Association.
With warmest regards to all for a wonderful new year -
Ruth Wolff
